WHY * new * ?
*new* is an artist-run gallery that showcases a broad range of contemporary visual art. Since its inception in 2003 in the Distillery District, the gallery has been host to many successful collaborations between art, craft and design. In 2006, *new* moved to its present 906 Queen Street West location which offers a larger space, excellent traffic flow and high visibility. While *new*’s prime purpose is to provide a space where artists of all media can exhibit, the collective has also sponsored a series of lectures and published critical essays.
CALL FOR NEW *new* MEMBERS
Members of *new* have the opportunity to mount their own exhibitions with complete creative control as well as partake in the collective’s group shows, like the Washi Summit. Our Queen Street West location ensures an excellent traffic flow so that exhibits get noticed. *new* participates in OBJECToronto, New Music in the Gallery and the Queen West Art Crawl. As well as members’ shows, *new* gallery presents work by other artists chosen from submissions for a rental fee.
Artists interested in applying for membership in this successful Ontario collective please send us a package that includes: a letter of interest, CV, artist statement, visual documentation of your practice (no originals please), and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Submissions are reviewed regularly.
Membership fees:
Initial Fee $300
Single member:
$80/month, solo exhibition every 18 months
Collective membership
$80 month, group exhibition of the collective every 18 months
RENTAL GUIDELINES FOR NON-MEMBERS
Exhibiting artists are responsible for installation, opening reception, invitations and promotion of their show. This includes sitting the gallery during opening hours on Saturday and Sunday, 1-6pm. The Gallery Assistant will sit Wednesday through Friday as well as act as a resource person for the artist. Shows may be two or three weeks long, with a fee of $700 per week, plus all applicable taxes and a 25% commission on works sold. Included is an advertising package of listings in SLATE, NOW on-line, Toronto Arts on-line, and the *new* e-mail invitation list. All fees are subject to change without notice.
