Lured by photography many years ago, I began to look back and study with fascination historical techniques and processes. These alternative photo based processes blurred the distinction between photography and painting. They gave me the freedom to move beyond the darkroom and to present another layer for the viewer to interpret and experience.
I also learned while studying the great masters, that it was important for me to start presenting my own point of view. I became interested in subjects that were in a state of flux. Soon I was attracted to images of things that were tarnished or stained, cracked or decomposed, crumbled and in disrepair; things that had a past and now changed with time.
The negative is only the starting point for me in the interpretation of my subjects. In the darkroom, I interact with these photographs conjuring the images out of the paper by further staining and distressing the paper; more recently working to achieve a similar effect on the computer.
I have been a constant student of photography. At 15 when my parents gave me my first camera, I embarked upon what was to be my photography journey and began to see the world through the eyes of camera. I continued on to formally study photography at York University and Humber College but mainly it was through my own persistence and determination that I have continued to produce and exhibit my images.
