Martina Edmondson was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and came to Canada during the 60’s. After a short stay in Australia during the early 70’s she returned to Toronto where she has made her home ever since. A late bloomer, she graduated with honours from the Material Art & Design Program at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in 2002. Since then, her work has been exhibited in numerous juried and group shows in the GTA and beyond.
In “Pages” - part of “/-’Age” with W Collective – she draws on her own experiences of mother-daughter relationships. Here, the female torso is used as a metaphor for a book where the pages consist of stiffened cheesecloth printed with handwritten text which is partly lost through the open weave, making it mysterious and secretive. In “Second Chance” her work references a second chance for both materials and subject matter through reincarnation or transformation. As one of five sisters, the relationship between and among these women have had a defining effect on her life and art, which was touched on in Second Chance and further communicated through her work “Sisters” - part of “Words Unspoken” with W Collective – where screen printed faces are superimposed over each other, resulting in a merging of individuals. Different combinations of sisters create different effects, not unlike the relationships themselves.
References to past, present and future generations and how they all relate continue to be threaded through her work.
