Artist: Anne Barros

Anne Barros, RCA, has been a practising silversmith since her graduation in Metal Arts from Humber College, Toronto, in 1978. Further study at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London, England, and benchwork for a production jewellery firm prepared her for a specialty in small functional holloware and flatware. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Germany, and is included in the permanent collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Canada Council's Paris Studio. As a writer she has documented metalworking in many articles and a 1997 book entitled Ornament and Object: Canadian Jewellery and Metal Art 1946-1996.
Artist’s Statement
For the past twenty-five years I have chosen to interpret my tiny corner of existence in the functional objects of everyday life. Making spoons, forks and serving pieces has enabled me to explore the graphic possibilities of flatware, the play of surface reflections and the sounds of silver. To these objects I often add commentary on the passing scene which recently has included grape vines from my garden, family values, and alternative energy sources. Historic and contemporary metal art also interests me and has led me to write on the history of the fork and Canadian jewellers and metalsmiths.
